Shanna Fliegel’s work is inspired by urban spaces and the natural environment. Growing up in New Jersey she was just 50 minutes from the city but close enough to the Appalachian Trail to spend her days swimming and camping as a child. She attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA in 1997 where the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley also fed into her work. After earning her BFA in Studio Art she accepted a year-long residency at the Cub Creek Foundation in Appomattox, Virginia. She was earned her MFA in Studio Art/Ceramics at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville in Illinois in 2008. She has been a resident artist and taught at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, New York, Brunswick Academy in Greenwich, Connecticut and the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. She was Assistant Professor of Art/Ceramics at Montana State University in Billings, Montana from 2010-2014.
