Michael Barnes’ work is based on self-investigation and is a reflection of his own subconscious. The work often depicts solitary figures that exist within vacuous environments, bound within these spaces while being tempted and agitated by exterior elements. He describes his current work as focused, “more directly on human nature...Te strange hybrid and mutated creatures...are domesticated beyond recognition and beyond any level or self-identity or function.” The creatures are trapped and anonymous, left to their own devices in an unfamiliar world. The act of translating these abnormal scenes and creation of meaning by each individual viewer through self-reflection is what the artist intends to inspire.
